Jason Lardner was born at Witney Coggs, Oxfordshire c. 1805, son of William Brooks Lardner and Sarah Sheppard. [1]

Naval Career

Jason Lardner was employed as assistant surgeon on the Spartiate in 1832 [2]

He was appointed Surgeon in the Royal Navy on 15 March 1838.

In 1841-42 he was employed on H.M.S. Jaseur at Gibraltar. H.M.S. Jaseur, 307 tons, Commander Frederick M. Boultbee was built Merchant's Yard in 1813. 71 officers and men, 24 boys and 20 marines were employed on board. John Thomas Jenkins was Assistant Surgeon [7]

Surgeon Superintendent Convict Ships

Jason Lardner was employed as Surgeon-Superintendent on three convict ships to Australia:

1). Woodbridge to VDL in 1843. Woodbridge departed England on 3 September 1843; arrived in Van Diemen's Land on Christmas Day 1843.

2). Tasmania to VDL in 1845 - Tasmania departed Dublin 2 September 1845; arrived in Van Diemen's Land 4th December 1845

3). Asia in 1847. - Asia departed Woolwich on 23 March 1847; arrived in Van Diemen's Land on 21 July 1847.

He kept a Medical Journal for each of these voyages.

Qualifications and Appointments 1850

He is listed in the London and Provincial Medical Directory 1850 - M.R.C.S. and L.S.A. 1827; Surgeon to H.M.S. Superb. [3]

He was appointed surgeon to the Guard ship Monarch stationed at Sheerness on 3rd December 1850[4]. The Monarch was paid off in 1854. It was noted in the Medical Times and Gazette that that James Lardner, former surgeon of the Monarch had not been re-appointed.

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census Jason Lardner age 45, Surgeon of the Royal Navy on Full Pay M.R.C.S. and Joseph B. Sheppard, 24, Surgeon M.R.C.S both resided at the house of their uncle Joseph Francis a retired Yeoman in Bridge Street, Witney, Oxfordshire.

1852 - 1853

Jason Lardner is on the List of Surgeons of the Royal Navy in 1852.

Jason Shepperd Lardner M.R.C.S.E. and L.S.A (1827), of Gillingham Kent, is listed in the Medical Directory 1853. He was stationed on the Royal Navy Guard Ship at Sheerness at this time, probably H.M.S. Orion 1853-1854. [5]

1861 Census

In the 1861 Census Jason and Sarah Larnder resided at Christmas Street, Gillingham, Kent. Their son Frederick a medical student age 19 lived with them. Their daughter Julia Anne was aged 8, and a sister in law, Jane Rowland was with them and employed as a governess.

Deputy Inspector-General of Hospitals 1863

Jason Lardner is on the Navy List of Deputy Inspectors-General of Hospitals and Fleets, Retired (23 January 1863)

1871 Census

In the 1871 Census Jason and Sarah still resided at Christmas Street, Gillingham. Jason gave his occupation as retired Deputy Medical Inspector. Their son Frederick age 29 resided with them. Qualifications M.R.C.S. and L.S.A. Their daughter Julia Ann, age 19 and grandson William S. Dawes age 9 also resided with them in Christmas Street. They had one servant.

Death

Jason Lardner M.R.C.S.E., died on 21st September 1875 at Gillingham Kent aged 70 [6]
