James Donovan was employed as Surgeon Superintendent on the convict ship Rajah with female prisoners to Van Diemen's Land in 1841. He kept a medical journal from 19th March 1841 to 19 July 1841.

James Donovan was on the Navy List of Officers fit for service in 1842.

He is listed in the Medical Register of 1865 -
